Hot stone massage therapy treatments have been used for centuries in the Singapore by Asian people.
More than 2000 years ago, the Chinese healed with heated stones. All around the world, there is record of early man using hot rocks for medical purposes.
My point? Hot stone massage works at reducing pain and stiffness, enabling muscles to stretch and release. It feels great, too, especially in fall and winter.
Basalt stones are best for holding heat and are found by riverbeds and inland as well. They tend to hold heat for a long period of time. That heat gets transferred to the body, increasing the ability to move the joints and increase circulation.Heated stones can be placed directly on the body or the therapist can hold the stone in his/her hand and massage the client directly with the stone, either on a massage table or in a massage chair.
A word of caution: Hot stones can burn the skin so be very careful of the temperature and how the client reacts to the heat. If the client finds the stones too hot, remove them immediately. You do not want to burn the client.
Heat the basalt stones in water in a heating unit or slow cooker to no more than 120 degrees. Use a thermometer and monitor it constantly. 110 degrees is probably better and safer.
Put stones on the desired area until the stones turn cool. Replace cool stones with new heated ones if needed.
Here is a helpful hint if the stones are too hot for you to handle: Fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and keep on hand. If the stones are too hot for you or for the client, just give them a spritz or two to cool them down quickly. It works very well. I got this hint in an e-mail from one of my readers, Cindy. Thank you, Cindy!
Stones should be cleaned with a mixture of rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, and water placed in a spray bottle. Spray and wipe off the stones after each client.
Therapists can order sets of stones from massage stores or they can find their own stones in rivers and streams. Different sized stones fit different parts of the body. Kits can be purchased online that include the stones and a heater.
Hot stone massage Singapore therapy, when performed correctly, calms, soothes, and comforts the client.
